It's scary because they all know exactly what was meant.
Saturday night we took Ammo to hear his best friend's brand new band play for their first time ever at a coffee house. They'd been practicing for five days and knew four and a half songs. The parents hid in cars or stayed in the back with their cappuccinos and lattes, most of the kids being 15 and not yet independent, but definitely wanting to appear cool and alone. They form little amoeboid groups. It's so weird. Ammo was early so he stood around with his friend and they stared at the drum set for a while. Then he took a seat. Three of his friends showed up and they took the seats around him. They don't really talk; they punch each other and laugh. Then the next group arrived and they surrounded that group, absorbing it and increasing in size and this physical wordless communication. Then girls came and they stood in their own little paramecia formation close--but definitely independent. Occasionally the edges would bump, with lots of giggling from the girl amoeboid and very occasionally a little pseudopod would venture into the other amoeboid temporarily, but no true mitosis occurred.
Please remember that I failed Biology in college so am not responsible for scientific accuracy; mostly I'm making this up as I go.. Alex is probably dying.
