<<<It's 'the media' which keeps government from too much excess.>>>

Amen, W.M.

Having worked as a member of the press for four years, I can confirm that you are right on the mark. If the media (especially newspapers) were not out covering all the major, and many minor, public meetings, governments federal, state and local would do whatever they damn well pleased.

Tax hike? Sure, no problem. The people won't know till they get the bill. Cut social security? Why not, nobody's watching anyway. Shovel contracts to our friends? Of course... who will ever know?

The elimination of the media "empire," conservative though it may be (increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few corporations), would do more to encourage a dictatorship in this country than any lack of guns.

You can find plenty of democratic societies with very restrictive gun laws (Britain comes to mind), but I defy you to find any without a free press.
