Here's an interesting little test of Amazon's market position: I spent some time looking for a few technical books on Internet e-commerce development and found a few titles at Amazon.com that looked interesting. Rather than buy the books at from list to 20% off at Amazon, I searched for "discount computer books" on a search site and came up with several competitive web book merchants. As anyone who's done a search knows, this wasn't very painful. I found a few good sites but decided on Bargain Computer Books at bargaincomputerbooks.com because it had a fairly good search engine. I quickly found the exact books I had found at Amazon.com. This entire search took me about 10 minutes and saved me about $50. One typical example that was priced at $31.96 at Amazon I found at $19.97 at Bargain Computer Books. I wouldn't even think about buying books at Amazon.com until I see if they are competitive - what I found is that they don't even come close! Future price pressures will severely cripple the stratospheric expectations for this stock, IMO.
