PALO ALTO, Calif., July 6 (Reuters) - Internet mania intensified on Monday with stocks of the big online businesses hitting stratospheric levels as a little-known Texas company made a bold bid to get in on the action.

Zapata Corp. (ZAP - news), a one-time oil driller founded in 1953 by former U.S. President George Bush, said it had bought or invested in 21 Web sites and would work to build itself into ''one of the largest
Internet companies in the world.''
