I just received e-mail from Michael Mawby, VP , American Diabetes Association with great details on the Medicare law changes of July 1. The law makes reimbursement the same for both types. It requires a new prescription every six months from a doctor who must specify if the patient is being treated with insulin or not, the number of strips to be dispensed and the frequency of testing. The doctor cannot just state " as needed". The Medicare coverage now covers at least 4,200,000 seniors. The self management and training part of the coverage is still being "clarified" but the payment schedule is $55.41 per hour for an individual training session and $32.62 per beneficiary training hour in group sessions (variable by geographic area). Put the aging population demographics in front of this and new medical research that will lower the glucose levels for diabetes risk and PM will stay very busy. There will be significant media/education efforts made to get the news out about this expanded coverage. ADA has made a major effort to get this coverage through Congress and they are to be commended. Sam
