Engineer,
I think USRobotics, Rockwell and Lucent should sit down and agree to work on "inter-operability" TODAY.
As it stands now, there are clearly two camps:
USRX, DELL, Gateway, many ISPs........
Rockwell, Lucent, COMPAQ, many ISPs...........
Is that ridiculous? (Will you buy any 56K modems from any one of them and know later on you have to upgrade it?, USRX is betting you will, but someone else will be more cautious)
If the situation does not improve in the near future, you will see USR modems will not be able to talk to Microcom modem based on Rockwell K56 Plus or MegaHertz Modem based on Lucent flex2 56K modems. As it stands now, the MicroCom 56K modem will be able to talk to MegaHertz 56K modem because they are promised to be inter-operable.
Protocols are only valuable if you endorse it. People who fail to recognize that have to regret later on.
