It's Tuesday, so it is time for some news: F3 being installed in Malaysian bank . . . .
First, let's go back to an AP Worldstream article of December 22, 1997, which reported that Siemens Nixdorf and Fingerscan-Singapore "are working together towards incorporating fingerprints into smart cards for a bank in Malaysia. According to Fingerscan's vice president for Asia Phillip G. Sibree, the company is supplying biometric identity verification original equipment manufacturing (OEM) kits to Siemens Nixdorf Malaysia together with integration tools for [ATMs]. . . . For the smart card system, a special OEM version of Fingerscan's F3 biometric identity verification device will be used."
On June 18, 1998, the New Strait Times Press (Malaysia) reported: "Southern Bank Berhad has emerged as the first bank in Malaysia and the Region to adopt Siemen Nixdorf's fingerscan biometric software in a move to make automated teller machine [ATM] transactions more secure. The technology . . . is being used on a trial basis, but will soon be launched to the public."
The article goes on to explain that the smart card carries a biometric template of the fingerscan. The card is inserted in the ATM, and the user submits to a finger challenge to verify his identity.
IN OTHER WORDS, F3 is very much out of the laboratory, and IDX has another bio-ID bank deal.
