Cymer Announces New Vice President of Process Quality; Appoints Edward Holtaway to Drive Company's Global Quality Initiatives PR Newswire - July 07, 1998 11:15
SAN DIEGO, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Cymer, Inc. (Nasdaq: CYMI), the world's leading supplier of excimer laser illumination sources essential for deep ultraviolet (DUV) photolithography, today announced that it has appointed Edward P. (Ted) Holtaway, 43, to the new position of vice president of process quality. Holtaway, who will report to Robert Akins, Cymer's president and chief executive officer, is chartered with enhancing Cymer's corporate-wide quality processes by optimizing and integrating current quality management activities, as well as introducing new "best practice" methodologies.
According to Akins, quality is one of the most important corporate initiatives on Cymer's strategic roadmap. "Over the last two years, we have aggressively expanded our manufacturing and business infrastructure to accommodate rising demand for our DUV lasers. We are now focused on fortifying our process infrastructure to ensure quality throughout all facets of our global organization as we continue to expand in keeping with market demand."
Akins reports that Holtaway's first priority will be to institute quality processes in three key areas: market analysis and forecasting; capacity planning; and new product development programs. The goal of all three programs is to ensure Cymer's ongoing ability to respond to customers' changing needs with the timely release and availability of the highest quality, highest performing DUV laser products and services.
"Ted's nearly two decades of semiconductor industry experience will be instrumental in ensuring that Cymer is able to achieve these goals and meet the service, support and technical needs of both our lithography and chipmaker customers worldwide. Additionally, the process refinements Ted will engineer and execute will be used to monitor and provide feedback on the company's performance and progress against plan," said Akins.
Holtaway brings a wealth of semiconductor quality process expertise to Cymer. For the past 13 years, he developed processes for San Diego-based Brooktree Corp., a fabless semiconductor company acquired by Rockwell Semiconductor Systems in September of 1996. During his tenure, Holtaway's executive posts included: vice president of corporate quality from 1989 to 1995; vice president and managing director of Brooktree's Singapore operations from 1995 to 1996; and most recently, director of Rockwell's San Diego operations from 1997 to 1998.
Prior to Brooktree, Holtaway served as product engineering section manager with National Semiconductor Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.) where he was responsible for working closely with new processes and circuit generation groups to identify whether problems were either process or design-related and to develop solutions accordingly. Holtaway holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York, and a master's degree in business administration from San Diego State University.
