I believe that silicon area is becoming the new scarcity, as the gap between pin bandwidth and processor speed increases and latency rises for all off chip connections. Thus I see dynamically programmable gate arrays as a crucial means of reusing silicon area on the fly. This principle applies to DSPs and other microprocessors and mediaprocessors. A semiconductor company in Atlanta called Quicksilver, for example, has created a chip that can successively execute TDMA, GSM, and CDMA protocols.
