Does anyone have information about the computer difficulties at the new Hong Kong airport? Here's hoping it doesn't have anything to do with the NN equipment installed there.
I thought I remembered NN getting this contracted so I went through the company press releases and found this from Jan. 97
ng Kong Airport Authority Selects Newbridge ATM Solution
Chek Lap Kok uses industry-leading MainStreet ATMnet switches to connect all voice, video, data traffic
KANATA, Ontario, January 8, 1997 -- Newbridge Networks, the global market leader in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology, today announced that it has been awarded the contract to supply the network equipment that will connect all voice, video and data systems at Chek Lap Kok Airport, Hong Kong's new airport set to open in 1998. The contract was awarded through Hughes Asia Pacific Limited, the integrator of the communications network.
The host Local Area Network (LAN) backbone in the airport's passenger terminal building, the information networks used by all network operators, and the fixed communications system (FCS) throughout the airport will be built using the industry-leading Newbridge 36170 MainStreet ATMnet Backbone Switch. The network will seamlessly integrate all private branch exchange (PBX), airline reservation, data communications, building control and video surveillance systems at the airport. It will connect the Airport Operational Database (AODB) system to the information network, operating as a single and complete LAN.
"We are looking forward to participating with Hughes in building this network for what is one of the world's largest infrastructure projects," said Terence Matthews, Chairman and CEO of Newbridge Networks. "This project will showcase the significant advantages of our ATM technology, the reliability of our networks and our dedication to providing superior value to our customers."
The 36150 MainStreet ATMnet Access Switch, a highly versatile, application-driven switch, will transport video images from security cameras installed at strategic points throughout the eight square-mile airport. The surveillance system will transmit high quality JPEG-compressed video signals at OC-3/STM-1 155 Mbit/s speeds to airport security monitoring centers. The scalability and standards compliance of the Newbridge 36150 and 36170 MainStreet ATMnet switches provide the Airport Authority the flexibility to meet future needs.
Network control will be provided by the 46020 MainStreet Network Manager, a powerful control and management system for multi-fabric, multi-vendor networks. It employs an easy-to-use graphical user interface (GUI) for management of networks of up to 5,000 network nodes and 100,000 network paths. The 46020 MainStreet system, with point-and-click configuration and end-to-end control from a single point, provides advanced management features such as automated call set-up across the network, customized views of the network and remote diagnostics.
The decision to install Newbridge equipment was based on the company's track record for building reliable, mission critical networks such as the Federal Aviation Authority network in the United States.
The new airport at Chek Lap Kok is one of the world's largest infrastructure projects. At completion of phase one of the new airport, Chek Lap Kok is designed to handle 35 million passengers and three million tons of cargo a year. The airport terminal will provide more than 320,000 square feet of space in departure and arrival lounges. Passengers will be able to shop and eat at more than 120 commercial and retail outlets and will have access to a fast and efficient road and rail system.
