John,
I think that your analysis make a lot of sense. AMAT, LRCX or NVLS can buy components cheaper from their suplliers than make it by themselves. Just like the auto makers doing right now. GM is the least profitble of all big three and Chrysler is the most profitable. The reson of that is that GM makes a lot of components by itself while Chrysler buy them from the suppliers. Very similar situation in the semi equipment market. If you can buy the components cheapper and just as good as you can build by yourself, why you want to carry all the overhead? Jim
