The New York Times reported in the March 6, 1998 edition, that over 450,000 livestock production sites are not in compliance with federal environmental standards. Of these sites 6,600 must be brought into compliance with Federal Law by the year 2001. Given the fact that the livestock industry in the United States produces over 1.375 billion tons of waste a year, more than 30 times that produced by people; this problem affects the country as a whole from North Carolina to California, from Washington to Wisconsin.
