Good and bad news Don from the June 22 Electronic Times - FSII is number 2 in VLSI's Best Equipment suppliers (small) - and has been on the list for four years now. It is always nice when customers like your product and service, although someone pointed out that sometimes these surveys are not unbiased: ****** US bank Morgan Stanley Dean Witter (MSDW) has almost doubled an earlier prediction for a global downturn in capital spending on semiconductor equipment during 1998. The firm now expects to see a 20 to 22% decline compared with its original forecast of 12 to 14% in its updated report. MSDW says there is unlikely to be any recovery until the second half of 1999, with the exception of the fast-growing deep UV lithography sector. Difficulties facing equipment manufacturers were also cited by US analysts at VLSI Research in their 1998 rankings of the '10 Best chip equipment suppliers'. VLSI concludes that companies have striven to improve their customer services operations to maintain market share with an "arguably surprising" result. The ratings, based on marks out of a perfect 10, showed average increases across three of the four sectors studied: test and materials handling equipment; process diagnostic equipment; and wafer process equipment. A small fall was recorded for assembly and speciality equipment.
