MPact is dead?!!!....
Guess there is now an opening for a replacement DVD Chip for Gateway desktops. Hmm, Gateway already uses Cube for laptops...
Chromatic Research Inc. said today that it has stopped development of its Mpact architecture, which was designed to combine multimedia functions on a single chip.
Instead, Chromatic will focus on a "new and unique" approach to media processing, although it would not give details of that architecture.
The Mpact processor had picked up supporters in Gateway Inc., which uses the processor in some of its systems, and chip makers LG Semicon Co., Ltd., SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics, and Toshiba Corp., which co-develop, manufacture and sell Mpact processors.
"This new architecture will solve issues that the Mpact processors have faced, by better fitting industry design cycles, by dramatically simplifying and opening the software environment , and by offering superior performance and integration," the company said in a statement.
The venture capital-backed company also said today that it has secured additional funding, but did not give details.
