TOKYO (Nikkei)--Major Japanese pharmaceuticals companies have begun
developing so-called 'lifestyle' drugs, such as products to help the obese lose
weight or smokers kick the habit, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Thursday morning
edition reported.

Eisai Co. (ESALF or 4523) plans to develop an obesity drug in cooperation
with Knoll AG, part of Germany's BASF AG (G.BAS) group. The company hopes to
beat rivals to the market with such a treatment by 2005.

Takeda Chemical Industries Ltd. (J.TKD or 4502) will work with Pharmacia &
Upjohn Inc. (PNU) to develop a chewing gum designed to help smokers quit.

An incontinence drug marketed by Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co. (J.YMP or
4503) earned Y30.3 billion in sales for the company in fiscal 1997, to become
one of the company's mainstay products.

Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Inc., Japan arm of Pfizer Inc. (PFE), is set to file
an application with the Health Ministry for approval to market Viagra, Pfizer's
impotence treatment.
