NorTel confirms PCS delay

Reuters Story - December 04, 1996 15:19

TORONTO, Dec 4 (Reuter) - Northern Telecom Ltd confirmed on
Wednesday that delays in testing network maintenance software
would stall the roll-out of parts of the Sprint
Spectrum personal communications services network.

But officials said Northern Telecom would sustain no
material financial impact from the delay.

"What's going to occur we are characterizing as a slight
delay in the turn-up of the systems for Sprint Spectrum that
has to do not with the core processing software, not with the
quality or capacity of the system but with...the backup
software," Nortel spokesman Robert O'Brien said.

"It really has to do with the monitoring, diagnostics and
maintenance of the system, which of course is critical to this
operation as well. Those last elements I have mentioned are
undergoing final testing in real time," O'Brien added.

O'Brien said NorTel did not expect any material financial
impact from the delay in the fourth quarter or full year.

NorTel was expected to resolve this issue by mid to late
January but the delay would push back the roll-out of the
Sprint system in those markets to be supplied by NorTel.

NorTel shares tumbled early in the day as investors grew
wary about the hiccup. But O'Brien said that was nothing more
than a "minor" delay with a complex new technology.

"Until they are completely satisfied that (the maintenance
and monitoring software) will operate as well as the core
processing software, we reached a decision with Sprint that the
most prudent thing to do is to incur a delay of a few weeks
rather than run the risk of turning up a service that might not
be as reliable as customers want," he said.

NorTel shares were off 2.80 at 84 in hectic trade on the
Toronto Stock Exchange and fell 2-3/8 at 62 in New York.
