Airedale;
First thanks for the information. I'm really not up to speed on the status of the DMT chipsets but I'll give you my impressions.

>>I talked to a spokeswoman at txn and she told me the c6x dmt chipsets will be available in commercial quantities "in the first half of 1999"<<

I believe TXN was shooting for 4th quarter '98 so it looks like they're around 6 months behind.

>>It looks like the time frame for dmt is taking longer and longer. i would think this must benefit wstl with cap now and dmt later and dslams that can handle both<<

You've got a valid point, one brought up here many times in the past. It hasn't seemed to help CAP deployments to any great degree though. With regard to C6X delay, I think a bullish case for Westell could be made if all the DMT silicon vendors were suffering setbacks, but I'm not sure that's the case. MOT's CopperGold has been delayed for over a year (more like 18 months I think) but is supposed to be ready 3rd quarter, Aware/ADI have a DMT chipset which I believe is (or shortly will be) being mass produced. Alcatel Mietec, Fujistu/Orckit, & PAIR's Falcon are other DMT silicon. The question is when will DMT be ready? Will it be '98... I don't know. If not I don't see how the telcos can wait another 6 months, seems to me they have to deploy CAP.

Westell has a strategic alliance w/TXN and has announced they will use C6X for DMT. If Westell were dependent on C6X for DMT I think this could be viewed as bad news, but I don't think they are, I think Westell can & will use other silicon solutions.

>>How will all these delays in dmt affect adsl lite plans?

I'm not sure of the time frame for DSL-Lite. Lucent Micro working w/Aware has a chipset for DSL-Lite (they were saying summer availability earlier in the year)& CG will support DSL-Lite as well. I think all the DMT silicon eventually will support DSL-Lite

>>The wstl story seems to be looking better and better.

You sure wouldn't know it by looking at the stock price, I agree w/you though...Hope this helps. Maybe Trey or Hal will jump in with their thoughts. Thanks again Airedale for dropping by and for the info. Dave
