Sex Pill Makers To Target Women
Thursday July 9

THE makers of sex pill Viagra are set to target women in a bid to boost sales. Early tests on the anti-impotence drug show it has an effect on females as well as on males.

Doctors expect a huge demand from men when it becomes available on the NHS in September.

They warn the demand could cost the NHS œ1billion a year - but that figure could soar if women are also clamouring for the wonder drug.

Viagra is not yet licensed in Britain and will only be available on prescription for men.

Urologist Derek Machin, of Liverpool, said: "Once this drug is available on the NHS it will be used by both sexes. That is inevitable.

Wildfire

"If it is as good as we hear it is, demand will be incredible. It could spread like wildfire through the female population."

He added: "The word is that Viagra works perfectly well on women as on men and will help those with female sexual disfunction.

"Female problems are a difficult area to research as, by and large, women do not come forward to complain.

"A lot of people do not realise there is a problem or that there is anything they can do about it.

"We have no idea of the scale of this problem in women."

Speaking at the British Medical Association's annual conference in Cardiff, Mr Machin said: "It is impossible to release a drug like this on to the market and for it not to be used by people who might benefit from it. Somehow they will get it and take it."
