ZAP CORP. to Acquire Advancing Women - One of the Top Women's Business Sites on the Internet -
HOUSTON, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Zapata Corp. (NYSE: ZAP - news) announced today that ZAP Corp., its Internet subsidiary, has entered into a letter of intent to acquire Advancing Women (http://www.advancingwomen.com), an award-winning, bi-lingual website for women in the workplace that is among the most popular sites for women on the Internet.
The announcement marks the 22nd Internet site and e-commerce business the Company has entered into letters of intent to acquire. On Monday the Company announced its intent to acquire 21 Internet sites and e-commerce businesses that will be integrated into ZAP's cutting-edge Internet portal, ZAP.com (http://www.zap.com). The Company estimates that the consummation of the proposed transactions would make ZAP.com among the largest Internet sites worldwide based on the number of users.
Advancing Women offers international networking, business and career news, forums, chat rooms and strategies to help women succeed and was featured as a top women's business site in the June 1998 issue of Elle Magazine. Among Advancing Women's many awards and honors are Dow Jones Select, Beatrice-Yahoo Pick, Lycos Top 5%, Microsoft Network, Underwire Selection, WWWomen Award, American Society Of Women Entrepreneurs Award, Best Of The Net - The Mining Company and Los Angeles Times Pick.
The transaction is subject to satisfactory due diligence and the execution of a definitive acquisition agreement. Other terms of the transactions were not disclosed.
In addition to its Internet initiative, Houston-based Zapata also holds 40% of the outstanding common stock of Envirodyne Industries Inc. (Nasdaq: EDYN - news) and 60% of the outstanding common stock of Omega Protein Corp. (NYSE: OME - news), the nation's largest marine protein company. Zapata also has approximately $117 million in cash and is debt free.
