The Bombay Company, Inc. Announces June Sales Increase

FORT WORTH, Texas, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bombay Company, Inc. (NYSE: BBA - news) reported today that sales for the five week period ended July 4, 1998 increased 32% to $35.1 million compared to $26.7 million for the corresponding period last year. Same store sales for Bombay stores in existence for more than one year also increased 32%.
For the fiscal year-to- date period, total sales were $125.7 million compared to $112.7 million last year, while same store sales increased 12% compared to the prior year.

Robert S. Jackson, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, stated that the Company was very pleased with the strong response to its Preferred Customer Events and the summer sale catalogue. ''The customer is responding to the attractive price points and our current product offerings. The beginning of the traditional summer clearance period has been very strong which should position the stores well for the new products to be introduced in the fall.''

The Bombay Company, Inc. is a specialty retailer marketing classic and traditional furniture, prints and accessories through a network of 407 Bombay stores and its mail order operations in the United States and Canada as well as over the Internet.
