It seems to me JD has problems with his SELL discipline. It's as if he can't let go of a stock that's gone wrong. I am thinking of SEW which is where I lost money. It took him a long time to face facts and bail, and I am sorry I didn't bail before I did.
I have a friend who used to work for MOT as an Engineer, designing modems. As a former employee, she thinks very little of MOT management, and wasn't at all surprised when they closed the plant down. She said the plant was 'grossly mismanaged'. Because of what she said, I never bought MOT. I pass this on to you FWIW.
Of course, she quit MOT at least four years ago. She worked modems, not wireless which apparently is what JD puts his faith in. They may have shaped up since then. Maybe the plant closing is a sign they are waking up and smelling the coffee. Good luck to you, but Caveat Emptor!
To be fair to JD: my other JD picks, except one, are all up: T, STD, ESF, HKT, RP, ERICY (GO ERICY!). I am still holding PDG at a loss. The reason I still hold it is as an inflation hedge; the good times can't roll forever. I may switch into oils, though. My Mark Skousen pick: BKEAY, is down, as is my very own pick: CHEUY. (yes, I bought both after the Asian meltdown, and I'm still down). On the whole, it has been better for me to have JD's newsletter than to not have it.
My big regrets: not buying NVTSY at 58. The reason I didn't buy at 58 was that JD had a limit of 56 on it. As the stock crept up, his limit crept up, but never to where I was able to buy the stock. So, I missed out on that one.
Here's one of my pet peeves about JD: he waffles on his 'buy below' targets without any explaining why he's changing his buy target. Look at NVTSY, for example, how the buy below keeps shifting; why? Why was it a bad idea last year to buy above 56 but a good idea to buy at 73 this year? JD may have an excellent reason for adjusting his target, but I'd like to know what it is so I can evaluate whether it's sound logic or wishful thinking. I wonder why he doesn't simply put a chart in every issue listing a buy limit and a sell price for every stock he follows. |
