A snake fishing trip

My first visit to this great thread

This happened a few days ago. On Monday evening my wife and I were feeding the ducks down at the pond. I had thrown them some corn and oats. As usual the catfish, sunfish and crappie were feeding on some of it. One catfish came right up to the edge and was concentrating on getting a piece of oats when out of the corner of my eye I saw something quiet large moving in under the water. In a flash not two feet from my feet a large snake darted in at great speed and snapped the catfish, which was about 12 inches long. The snake got a good grip on the fishes mid section. The snake vanished into the murky water only to reappear a short distance away on the bank. We had the binoculars with us so we viewed it swallowing this unfortunate catfish. Although the catfish stuck its pectoral and dorsal fins out in its normal defensive mode the snake still managed to swallow its prey fairly quickly. We had an excellent view of this feast. The snake had a heavy body and with a dark olive color, it had vertical stripes spaced all the way down its body and they ended in a netlike pattern on the top of its back. We were subsequently able to identify it as a Diamondback Water Snake (Nerodia rhombifera). We were very fortunate to view nature in action.
