<Does anyone have any good web sites or info on the "viability" of this technology for both voice and data services?>

Fixed wireless appears to be quite viable, both technically and economically. Teligent says its network is engineered to provide a minimum of 99.99% availability -- a quality level comparable to fiber optic based networks. From a cost standpoint, I've read that fixed wireless is a very efficient way to deliver high bandwidth to buildings with more than 20 lines. It has a clear cost advantage over fiber in buildings up to 500 lines, and is roughly equivalent in cost to fiber in buildings with more. Unbundled loops and unbundled T-1s are said to be the choice for the very small, <20-line buildings.
