-SIEMENS: Investment in R&D centre will strengthen Siemens' position in the UK telecomms market

Presswire - July 09, 1998 13:59

M2 PRESSWIRE-9 July 1998-SIEMENS: Major investment in R&D centre will strengthen Siemens' position in the UK telecommunications market (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Siemens has announced a major investment of GBP 6.5 million to expand its research and development company, Roke Manor Research. The investment will create up to 150 new jobs at the Company, which is one of Siemens' established centres of competence in communications and sensor technologies, and one of the leading electronics R & D laboratories; in the United Kingdom.

The investment, which involves the construction of 4,000 square metres of laboratory space at Roke Manor Research's 22 acre site in Romsey, Hampshire, reflects Siemens' commitment to a GBP 100 million investment programme to build up its activities in the UK telecommunications arena, following the sale of its 40% stake in GPT to GEC in June 1998. This sale heralded a new strategy in the UK, with Siemens now serving customers directly via two new companies, Siemens Telecom Networks and Siemens Newbridge Networks.

Paul Stein, Managing Director of Roke Manor Research, commented: "We are delighted to have been given this vote of confidence in Roke Manor Research by our parent Siemens, especially at a time when staying ahead in the innovation race is ever more crucial to success. It demonstrates Siemens' commitment to our customers in the UK and world-wide, and highlights our capabilities in providing them with leading edge technologies, especially broadband telecommunications, the next generation of cellular systems, and personal satellite communications."

The investment echoes the words of Alan Wood, Chief Executive of Siemens plc, in the industry commentary to the DTI's recently published UK R & D Scoreboard 1998: "As Siemens becomes more and more global in its operations and in its thinking, our structure has evolved accordingly. It is our clear objective, wherever we operate, to become an integral part of the country's economy and contribute to the well-being of that economy. Equally, we want to make the best use of the resources which we have throughout the entire organisation.

Siemens has established centres of competence, with responsibility for design, development and manufacturing, around the world. The UK plays a sizeable role in this network. Our R & D Centre Roke Manor Research, and our subsidiary Oxford Magnet Technology, are just two of the world-class centres of competence in the UK within our global innovation network."

Roke Manor Research offers world-class expertise and technology, from concept studies through to designs for production, in the areas of communications, information technology and networks, and electronic sensors. With a turnover in excess of GBP 23 million, and over 370 employees, Roke Manor Research has a broad range of customers in the civil and government arenas.
