Hey Chris, You sound like a newcomer to investing . Welcome. Your right in your assumptions that there are no guarantees in market performance of ANY security, but if you look back over past 50 years, you'll see a pattern of continued growth ( look up DOW performance) If your nervious, put your savings into CD's, but if you believe in our economy and the future - pick the best companies you can find, due DD and make an investment. Growth also depends on your expectations for return and also your time frame . Good Luck - FYI, I am long on CSCO and plan to keep this stock until I need the $ for retirement
