Sonny, sorry, try this one:

cbs.marketwatch.com

I have two concerns about Compaq buying AMD (even though I don't have any CPQ).

1. The obvious reason...knowing what I do about Intel and AMD: one does it right and the other does it all wrong. The one that does it right is not for sale, but, for heaven's sake, don't buy the wrong one just because they are for sale. Also, why not let them fight it out in a price war and just take advantage of the constantly dropping prices, as they have been doing?

2. Too many acquisitions in a short period of time can really bog down a company. Assimilation, looking for synergies, consolidating, possible layoffs are all very energy and resource consuming. Compaq is still assimilating Tandem and DEC. Another purchase could be extremely taxing on Compaq mergers and acquisitions, actually all their people, and be potentially disastrous.

As far as Pfeiffer wishing to be $50 Billion by 2000 or something, well, Krushchev was going to bury us, too. Bad analogy, huh. <g>

Anyway, just an IMHO.

Tony
