For a local meltdown(i.e. in Indonesia), a foreign paper like the greenback will do the job.(Greenbacks earn interest, which gold does not). For a global meltdown, only gold will. Do you see a potential global meltdown that will topple stock markets worldwide and send gold flying? Besides the worst of y2k, I don't see one just yet.
