You're confusing the market indices with the market.

The market indices have been increasingly represented by services
companies since the early 80s. The pressure on those manufacturing
and industrial companies are depressing those stocks since they
undergo revisions in estimates and report actual results. They may
have a recovery rally after the reporting period is over in a similar
manner to late Winter-early Spring.
