To Al C

or

may I call you David

or

do you prefer Mr Snow

You are a knowledgeable individual and I was hoping you could settle an argument I was having with a friend. We were discussing the issue of privacy and the internet. Specifically the issue debated was individuals who participate on various discussion forums, such as SI, using aliases. The question was wether their identities would be revealed in a legal proceeding such as a criminal fraud investigation or an SEC inquiry into stock manipulation. Since their names, e-mail addresses and ISP numbers are all available to the various services such as SI it was my opinion that this information could be obtained with a subpoena. He thought they might be protected my some sort of privacy rule, like when you talk to a priest.

Which of us do you think is right?
