Stewart -
Great question. In fact the fastest growing computer vendor is not Dell - it's WB (White box), the hundreds of thousands of small mom and pop outfits selling 2 or 3 systems a week. These outfits can get to very low costs since they buy unfashionable components on the spot market. To make the point to one of my clients I recently put out a quote to 5 of these outfits locally - it was a pretty fuzzy quote looking for a desktop computer and asking them for recommendations. The low bid was a 200MHz pentium MMX with 8X CD, 64MB memory, 2 gig HD, sound card and the usual ports. cost - $210. that's right, $210.

These folks are taking the bottom out of the second tier players. Dell is taking the top out of those same second tier players.

Dell does not currently compete in that market and could not profitably either compete with or supply the white box players.

This is a fascinating topic, but not one I see impacting Dell any time soon.
