Visited Fry's, saw $499 WinChip machine.
Palo Alto store has it in the back row with other
cut-rate clones, refurbished systems, and discounted
floor display units. Computer brand-name is "Laguna."
200 MHz WinChip, 16 MB ram, 1.7 gig HD, 24x CD, 33.6 modem.
They had a $130 monitor ("Pixie" 14-inch) sitting beside it.
Cyrix 200 MHz machines were $100 to $200 more expensive.
No customers were interested in computer systems last night,
except for a few looking at laptops, and some kids playing
video games. Most foot-traffic was looking at software,
modems, and cell phones. Only 9 check-out stands active,
and averaging 15 person backlog in line. Back-to-school
and Christmas rushes can indeed be sights to behold; woe
to high-tech if they fail to materialize this year.
