I don't want to turn this thread into a soap box BUT look at the BILLIONS of dollars spent on Public Education, guess how much goes to the actual education of the child??
Very small percentage.
I heard that a couple of states, I believe Florida is one, is experimenting with high schoolers staying at home and being taught through the Internet. I think this is fantastic !!!
That is what I was talking about. Efficiency. So much time is wasted during the school day on STUPID stuff, like passing in the halls, homeroom, lunch, etc. etc. You know this already. Very inefficient. It becomes a freakin country club atmosphere. Waste, waste, waste.
How about this idea, close all high schools. Give students a computer. Learn through the internet specific curriculum. Teachers will meet with students on a regular basis, say once per week for testing, etc. The rest of the time teachers work with students individually that need one on one help. They could even travel to students home and help the parents become assistants. The money saved by closing the drafty buildings could be used to purchase the computers AND hire EXTRA teachers for remedial work. The possibilities are endless. Learning could go on year round instead of the outdated 180 days. How many of us are still farmers??
The savings would be incredible. The benefits would be awesome. Here is a little tidbit, the latest research has shown that teenagers need much more sleep than they are getting. This has a direct effect on what is learned in school. Some communities has adjusted their schedules accordingly and have seen a marked improvement in learning.
I have always said that the 6 1/2 hours spent in school per day boils down to at the most 3 hours of learning. The rest is bull.
Here we are ready to enter the 21st century and will still sit them at desks in rows according to a calendar that was invented to coincide with the growing season. WHAT A WASTE.
The best article from IBD was the one about Practice makes perfect. Fantastic and this fits the role of the computer perfectly. Think of all those Dell computers that could be sold. :o)
Well so much for not turning this into a soap box, SORRY EVERYONE |
