It comes down to political pull. Lucent has it (thru its dealings w/ Baby Bells and Ma Bell); Boeing/McDonnell Douglas has it; Citibank has it (the Fed saved Citi's rear end in the early 90s for pete's sake). Let's see who doesn't have political pull: Intel, Microsoft, Worldcom, TLAB (if the nonsense on the Yahoo board is to be believed). What's in common among these 4 companies? Lack of money to buy political pull? No. These 4 companies did not have political pull because they as true entrepreneurs refused to play the Beltway insider game. They didn't go hats in hand and beg for political favors. Instead they competed vigorously in what they naively thought is a truly free market. Fat chance. These companies treated the politicians and clueless regulators with contempt, and now they are going to pay the price, one way or another.

PS: The same thing happened with the tobacco companies, which, fortunately, they have the good sense to fight back. You just watch, the HMOs are next. But I digress.
