The world's first MPEG-2 video editing system:
Smart Solution '601 [six-o-one]' from FAST

June 12, 1998: '601 [six-o-one]' is the name of the new all-in-one solution for digital video editing from FAST Multimedia. As the world's first editing solution based on the MPEG-2 standard, 601 stands for uncompromising productivity and quality in video post-production. It combines the hardware of the future with Fast's own editing software on the Windows NT platform. 601 is ready to meet the rigorous demands of professional editors in the studio as well as DVD. 610 processes two MPEG-2 data streams in real time. The basic 601 package will be available worldwide at the end of 1998.

This MPEG-2 editing solution takes its name from ITU.R-BT601, the international standard for broadcast video. 601 was developed in close cooperation with American chip specialists C-Cube Microsystems and is the first video editing system to leverage the C-Cube chip DVxpress. FAST's founder and CEO Matthias Zahn had this to say about the development of 601: "As far as MPEG-2 chips are concerned, C-Cube is the best in the world. 601 is thus the first editing solution in the world to meet the MPEG-2 standard, which is the video format of the future." In its 'Editing MPEG' variant (MPEG-2 422 P@ML, I-Frame only), this format can be edited frame accurately, and 601 supports data rates of up to 50Mbps....

...Availability

The basic 601 package with Y/C and SDI will be available worldwide at the end of 1998. The upgrade options for YUV will be released in winter with the DV/i.LINK option to debut in early 1999.
