LDP projected to not do well in Japan exit polls. This probably means we're headed down big time tomorrow. Jay

TOKYO, July 12 (Reuters) - Japan's Liberal Democratic Party will consider the future of Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto after the party's stunning election setback, the ruling party's Secretary-General Koichi Kato said on Sunday.
Television network projections have said that the LDP would get less than 50 seats in the vote for one half of the less-powerful Upper House.

''We will discuss that when the final results are in,'' Kato said when asked whether the LDP will make clear the responsibility of its top officials for an election defeat.

Kato said it would be ''very tough'' for the LDP to win the 61 seats it wanted to win in the Upper House in light of the preliminary polls from Sunday's election.

While the vote cannot oust the LDP -- or Hashimoto -- from power directly, the figures are seen as a humiliating setback that could force the prime minister to go.

''Taking responsibility'' is often used in Japan to mean that the official in question will have to resign.

Despite the defeat, the LDP will remain Japan's ruling party since it has a comfortable 13-seat majority in the more-powerful Lower House.
