Interesting marketing idea for IOM

I read this on the Yahoo board:

"What I have generated is a plan to convert floppy storage to ZIP technology. I'm not sure if this had been discussed before, or ever executed with IOM...so if it has, please let me know.

Here is a brief overview of what I think will drive market share in the right direction. A floppy trade in.

It's quite simple actually...consumers are chained to some of there floppies. They'd love to eliminate the need for 70 disks filled with Word files, PowerPoint presentations, etc...but these files are already on these disk. People are lazy...we all know that. So...the plan, a floppy trade in program. Consumers send in there floppies (up to the max capacity of a zip...I believe it is in the 70 ballpark) to Iomega for the free conversion to a Zip disk. This zip disk will then be returned to the consumer (with their originals too) In addition, information on the various zip drives, where to purchase in your area, and a coupon rebate will also be enclosed.

I have yet to calculate a potential ROI...but the investment isn't that large. Zip disks cant cost IOM much, the labor involved can be completed by almost anyone. On the flip side, the potential market penetration is huge. Tell me what everyone thinks....

Eric "
