IOM has NO potential to make money? I think you need to ask yourself why Sony, Avatar, SYQT, Castlewood, Swan are producing removable storage devices and are fighting for more of the market share. Also why the craze over CD-R devices. Removable storage devices present one of the best opportunities for a company to have good sales in the future.

My thoughts on synergies is this: If one company is currently buying material to place in disk drive/removable storage devices then more purchases would/could be made cheaper.

Look at IBM. Analysts have stated that IBM's disk drive component manufacturing operations are currently so efficient they are making money producing drive components and selling them to other IBM units and outside companies. If you have researched the disk drive industry you could see what a tremendous feat this is.

Furthermore is SEG and IBM push harder then KMAG, RDRT, APM, HMTT, and others will have problems. This will make it harder for Sony, Imation and others to compete. This is what I mean by synergies.
