Users aren't exempt from libel and defamation laws, however. In February, Presstek (PRST), digital imaging company in Hudson, N.H., settled a lawsuit with three people who posted defamator remarks about the company mostly through America Online postings, according to general counsel Bob McDaniel.
The defendants used the Internet to push down the company's stock, he said. They posted "things that just simply did not exist," like allegations that Presstek executives were being subpoenaed for grand jury investigations, McDaniel said.
Financial terms of the settlement weren't disclosed, but McDaniel said the company would likely sue again if the situation arose. And, he said, there was a strong interest from other companies after Presstek sued: he received at least 25 calls from chief executives who wanted to know ho Presstek had taken the defendants to court.
"The people in chat rooms seem to be there with some kind of agenda", McDaniel said. Not surprisingly, that agenda is usually making more cash. But there's a better way to make profits, according to Bhatia. |
