(OFF TOPIC) Herbert Hoover Hashimoto is History

In Sunday's Upper House election in Japan, the LDP suffered a humiliating and crushing defeat from voters who turned out in large numbers --- unexpectedly--- to register their anger at the failure of Japan's ruling Party to seriously address Japan's mounting financial crisis.

Coincidentally Alan Greenspan and 30 BFIS bankers are in Japan to be briefed on the Japanese Bridge Bank which was to have been set up in proposed legislation. Its obvious they will press for more action. The prevailing American opinion is against fiscal stimulus and in favor of tax cuts. However several opposition parties have been calling for a reduction of the consumption (sales) tax back from 5% to 3%. other factions in the LDP which of course is still in power will press for more fiscal stimulus.

The initial problem will be one of settling upon a new leader. However once that leader is selected he will have to go farther than Herbert Hoover Hashimoto was willing to go in addressing Japan's problems and satisfying international critics and a Japanese public that wants something done or all hell may break loose.

The S&P futures were down bigtime 5.4. The YEN hit 142.95 up 1.45. But the Nikkei is only down -117 at 11:50PM Sunday, a fraction.

People may wise up by morning and realize that the Japanese public just gave the ruling party a kick in the seat of its pants and a demand to significantly address the economic problems of Japan. The message is do more not less to solve the problems or we will throw you out of office. I do not think the next prime minister can afford to be as complacent as Herbert Hoover Hashimoto was.

Should be an interesting market Monday. I'll be watching Europe and to see if Clinton has any statement (Hashimoto was supposed to come here after the election triumph.) Will Clinton learn any lessons from these elections that the State Department might apply to its Russia policy? Is Yeltsin next?
