I think it safe to say that outlets such as SI have changed the face of investing. I feel there is sufficient evidence to show that the quality and tone of particular message boards can indeed influence investors and affect the price of certain stocks. The recent spate of lawsuits and threatened lawsuits against various on-line personna indicates to me that companies no longer view sites like SI as mere chat rooms.

The big question then is: What can SI do to preserve the integrity of its message boards and not let the fear of lawsuits against members unduly influence what is said in the months and years ahead?

Here's what I propose:
1. Allow and indeed encourage companies to participate in their own threads... for free.
2. Clearly label company personnel with red tags after their names saying "Company Rep" or somesuch.

My hope is that if companies feel they have an outlet for their frustration -- whether they use it or not -- they will be less likely to vent using a lawsuit or the threat of one.

I also want to make it clear that whenever someone from a company asks me if they should actively participate on their particular thread I say "NO"! I tell them every word will be scrutinized and every person responding to their posts will expect an answer-- a no win situation. However, much like the CEO of FTEL recently did, I think a general shareholders letter every now and then to clear the air would be a good compromise and serve to lessen tensions.
