There is definitely a close relationship between $A and commodity prices but also a very strong one recently between the Yen and $A. I Haven't done any statistical analysis and so am not sure which is really driving the $A- the direct Asian impact or indirect through commodity prices.

Buying Aussie dollars or shares is therefore a gamble as it isn't very clear whether either trend is yet about to turn. The best performing Aussie shares recently have been in Telecoms/finance and other service industries.
