Who's minding the storage?

SANs hold promise, but management apps are needed

The emergence of Fibre Channel switches and hubs promised to kick off a new generation of high-performance, centralized network storage products.

But these so-called SANs (storage area networks), in which storage devices are separated from servers to free up LAN bandwidth and server processing cycles, have yet to win the favor of IT managers.

One reason: a lack of adequate management software. That's about to change, as Exabyte Corp., Storage Technology Corp., IBM and EMC Corp. are readying software for managing SAN traffic.

Without management software to keep track of data, the SAN, which supports the attachment of storage systems on a shared-access network, is of limited use. [snip]
