I think it does mean something. The ISPs don't have anything to gain
by taking sides in this issue. As I've been saying, interoperability
is the basis for the Internet. Sure, Netcom wants 56K and they must
have USR equipment, so they endorse x2. They probably also have
Ascend, Cisco, etc. and want everything to interoperate. They also
don't want to deal with end users with Rockwell based Zooms, who can't
connect to Total Control. So they endorse Rockwell's and Lucent's
announcement of interoperability, hoping that USR will get with it and
focus on the standard. 56K is useless until it's standards-based.
