Walter Industries Board Authorizes Stock Repurchase Program

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 1998--Walter Industries, Inc. (NYSE: WLT) announced today that its board of directors has authorized the company to repurchase up to two million shares of Walter Industries common stock.

The purchases may be made from time to time in the open market or in privately negotiated transactions, as deemed appropriate by the company.

Kenneth E. Hyatt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said "The board's action underscores management's confidence in the company's future prospects and our view that Walter Industries common stock is undervalued relative to our recent performance and earnings potential."

The company currently has 53,885,594 shares of common stock outstanding.
