DJ: DCI Subsidiary Expands into South Africa
STRATFORD, Conn., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- DCI Telecommunications, Inc. (OTC
Bulletin Board: DCTC), an international provider of telecommunications and
Internet services, announced today that its CyberFax Inc. subsidiary of
Montreal, Canada has expanded its global real-time Internet fax network to
South Africa, with the addition of CyberFax S.A. as a commercial partner.
Based in Johannesburg, CyberFax S.A. launched its service on July 6th and is
aggressively marketing its value-added service through its direct sales
force, to telecom and Internet technology companies throughout South Africa.
As this strategically important market develops, CyberFax S.A. will expand
its reach into other high margin African markets to establish a strong
sub-equatorial network presence for CyberFax and its other international
partners.
"We anticipate that the market in South Africa will rapidly adopt this new
technology and take advantage of the inherent cost savings offered for
international fax," states Michael Spencer, managing director for CyberFax
S.A. "This represents a tremendous opportunity to secure a major share of
the market by being the first to offer this service in sub-equatorial
Africa."
CyberFax Inc., which has been carrying live commercial traffic over its
global real-time Internet fax network since early April, has seen its
traffic volume and revenue increase steadily with its existing points of
presence. Paul Callihoo, executive vice president for CyberFax Inc. added,
"With the addition of new partners such as CyberFax S.A., this further
strengthens our position as a global service provider while meeting our
strategic initiative of developing key markets with high margin-trading
opportunities."
By offering the first commercially available real-time Internet fax service,
CyberFax has established itself as the market leader for this low cost
alternative for international fax, which provides significant cost saving to
the end customer through the use of leading edge Internet technology.
CyberFax contributed to the establishment of the International
Telecommunications Union Recommendation T.38, formally accepted as the
standard for real-time Internet fax at Geneva this past June. T.38 will
enable inter-carrier routing between multiple suppliers and thus
opportunities for lower fax tariffs than on voice routes.
On a separate subject, DCI Telecommunications also disclosed that it is in
discussions with four publicly traded companies regarding possible
affiliations for the purpose of exploring strategic alternatives to enhance
DCI shareholder value.
DCI Telecommunications is an international provider of telephone services,
including long distance service, prepaid telephone cards and Internet
services. It has an extensive distribution network throughout North
America, Europe and the Far East, owns telephone switching facilities in
Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain and Denmark and has twelve operating
facilities, serving customers in eight countries. DCI recently reported
sales of $8.1 million and $938,000 in profit, before preferred dividends
(eight cents per share), for the fiscal year ended March 31, 1998.
