Utilities confident after years of
preparation

If preparation counts, Duquesne Light Co. and Allegheny
Energy Inc. customers shouldn't be dancing in the dark when the
clock turns on Jan. 1, 2000.

The power companies began tackling the year 2000 computer
bug, commonly known as Y2K, about five years ago. Company
spokesmen say they should have all systems ready for the New
Year's celebration of the century.

Whether the dozens of other companies that share the region's
massive power grid will be up to speed is something local utilities
can't control. Therein, say skeptics, lies the great Y2K question.
