Herb G. in street.com today...

Applied Materials (AMAT:Nasdaq): Nothing like waiting until
Friday afternoon to preannounce a lousy third quarter. There
oughta be a law. Chalk one up for Morgan Stanley's Jay
Deahna for calling this one -- a preannouncement -- right, and
BT Alex. Brown's Byron Walker for having the conviction not to
recommend the stock for many a month. What I wanna know
is: What took Applied so long to admit what everybody else
already knew? And why did they wait 'til late on a Friday? Why
does anybody wait until late on a Friday? Trying not to be
seen? These days -- not a chance.

Oh, and the company blames its preannouncement, its first
during this down cycle, on delayed orders and spending cuts
in Asia. Duh!

(Interesting paradox, though; AMAT's balance sheet remains
the picture of health, so strong that don't be surprised if value
investors, with stomachs of steel and a penchant for patience,
load up if the stock goes down.)

Herb running out of things to say?
