Grant, An eye does not need to appear all at once with lens and cornea. If you shine a flashlight on a nightcrawler, it's whole body recoils. All of it's skin cells are "eyes". Here in Texas there are worms with specialized skin cells that are darker than the surrounding cells, and are therefore more useful for finding the direction that the light is coming from, but they can't "see" clearly like we do. There are two of these spots where we would expect to find eyes, because that is the most useful place for them to be. It is not difficult to imagine these clusters of light sensitive cells becoming more specialized, with a clear surface for instance, over a long period of time, and many generations. Evolution is nothing more than the increased specialization of groups of cells.

It must be remembered that almost all animals that die leave no trace because they are eventually consumed by other animals, and if that fails by bacteria. It is not surprising that all intermediate species are not found. It is only under special conditions that a dead animal is fossilized, such as being suddenly buried by dry volcanic ash. Harry Truman, the old guy that refused to leave Mt. Saint Helens, will someday make a fine specimen.
