fiberman,

The Permedia3 is a very formidable chip, the question is whether they can get it to market in time to compete with TNT, Savage3D, Banshee, or other unannounced products. The raw performance numbers look very much like the TNT from nVidia, the company that 3Dlabs most has to displace for those high end add-in board orders. The price on the Permedia3 will be high, so the performance must be best of class.

My initial read of the specs is that the Permedia3 will out perform the Savage3D on 3D, but the cost will be substantially more. My performance guess is because of the higher Permedia3 fill rate (250 MPix/sec.) S3 has always been very commercial and probably wouldn't mind not having the highest WinBench scores as long as S3 got nice big chunks of OEM business at lower unit prices. Again, that's the key, OEM design wins for either company.

The things I wonder about on these monster chips like the Permedia3 and TNT are size and yield. These chips must be as big as a ham sandwich. Yields drop on large chips forcing up the unit price. So, I'd guess there will be lots of room for S3 to work with on price.

By the way, that link you provided was a good comparison of the product specs.

That's about all I can say on this.
