UNITA Forces Kill 19 Civilians; Raid Bie, Uige Areas
Radio Nacional de Angola on July 9, 1998
UNITA's [National Union for the Total Independence of Angola] residual forces yesterday attacked a civilian vehicle on the Caculama-Quela-Malanje road, killing 19 people and wounding four others. The assailants then plundered the vehicle.
In Bie Province, UNITA residual forces have raided and occupied the Malengue communal area, 48 km from the capital of Chitembo District, forcing the local authorities to flee. In view of the scale of the clashes, installations were razed to the ground, and hundreds of civilians have fled to the bush. The number of victims is not yet known, and the deputy provincial governor described the situation as difficult.
In Uige Province, the military situation is worrying. UNITA residual forces began shelling the Buengas Sul communal area as of dawn today. Preliminary reports say one person was wounded. UNITA residual forces occupied eight locations of Uige Province in June.

UNITA Blamed For "Heavy Fighting" in Lunda Norte Province
Radio Nacional de Angola on July 6, 1998
Heavy fighting has been reported in Lunda Norte Province's Camaxilo region since 0600 [local time throughout] today. Our correspondent Cabo Dias has the details. [Dias - recording] Provincial Police Commander Victor Inaculo first discussed the attack reported on the Lucapa-Luo road.
[Inaculo] (?There has been military activity) in Lunda Norte, which is characterized by major ambushes launched by UNITA [National Union for the Total Independence of Angola] military forces on the main roads. We have already reported the incident on the Lucapa-Luo road, leading to Saurimo, in which 15 people were killed and 15 others wounded. Our comrades based at Camaxilo, Caungula District, reported that at approximately 1000 today, a police vehicle detonated three anti-tank land mines. All its occupants were killed.
[Q] What have the police done?
[A] Our comrades in Caungula went to the scene of the incident to see if there was anyone to be rescued but there was none because the vehicle was destroyed. It has been reported that a UNITA group has begun to shell Camaxilo. We will give more details tomorrow.
